MANILA, Philippines – Tatlumpu’t anim na endangered Philippine crocodile ang pakakawalan sa Siargao Island Protected Landscape and Seascape (SIPLAS).
Isa ang Philippine Crocodile Crocodylus Mindorensis sa lahi ng buwaya na nanganganib maubos.
Ayon kay DENR-PAWD Director Theresa Mundita S. Lim, kailangan pakawalan ang mga buwaya upang dumami ang lahi nito at makatulong sa pag-balanse sa ating eco system.
“We’re expecting the fisheries would be richer with the presence of the crocodile and next is we’re hoping to establish viable population alam naman natin endangered na yon wala na siya sa dating areas na nakikita siya.”
Ang Crocodylus Mindorensis ay may sukat na 1.5 hanggang 3 metro at hindi ito kasing agresibo gaya ng mga Crocodylus Porosus na may sukat na 3 hanggang 6.5 metro.
Unang nadiskubre ang Crocodylus Mindorensis sa Naujan Lake sa Oriental Mindoro kaya ito tinawag na Mindorensis.
Ayon kay Lim, mabuting lugar ang Siargao Island para sa mga buwaya dahil sanay na ang mga tao sa lugar na may gumagalang buwaya sa paligid.
Ayon naman kay Vicente Mercado, presidente ng Crocodylus Porosus Philippines Inc., layunin rin ng programa na mapalakas ang eco-tourism sa lugar.
