MANILA, Philippines — The upgraded version of the electronic jeepney is now back in the streets. Global Electric Tranport and Pasang Masda presented today the Comet model 2, an alternative to traditional jeepneys that is more efficient and convenient to commuters. The original model has been upgraded. The suspension, wiring harness, electronics and the battery were changed to make it suitable for longer travels. E-jeepney aids in combating pollution because it doesn’t use gasoline. It also doesn’t add to the traffic congestion. “We see that by having a management system na ginagawa po natin, dinesdispatch po natin ang mga comet on scheduled basis, imbes na sabay-sabay. At tumitigil lang po sa mga takdang stop, naiiwasan natin yung pagkakabuhol-buhol,” said Frankie Endriga general manager of Pangea Philippines (We see that by having a management system, we dispatch the comet on a scheduled basis, instead of deploying them all at the same time. It stops only at designated areas to avoid creating congestion.) Currently there are fourteen comet 2 jeepneys plying from Sm North EDSA to Katipunan, LRT Station. Two jeepneys are taking the route from SM North to Luzon Avenue, while two more are being used inside the Clark International Airport. These numbers will increase in the following months as the manufacture of additional vehicles continues. The e-jeepney fare is seven pesos and fifty centavos for the first four kilometers, and an additional one peso and fifty centavos for each kilometer onwards. The jeepney uses an electronic card that passengers can buy from booths at the terminal. This is an example of the electronic card, and you can load this up with a minimum amount of 10 pesos, and there is no maximum amount. So if you want to ride the comet jeepney, you have to tap first the card here, and inside, there is a registration system that will show you the amount of balance available in the card. The jeepney can take in 20 passengers per trip. Since this is seen a perfect alternative to traditional jeepneys, global electric transport is giving assistance to operators who would want to convert their vehicles. “We have a financing program for existing jeepney operators who wish to convert their units to a comet,” Endriga said. Passengers can ride the comet jeepneys Monday to Saturday from 5:30 in the morning until 9:30 in the evening. (UNTV News)
